Thalantyr
The reclusive conjurer of High Hedge and the foremost living scholar of Ulcaster's work, Hilather's binding magic, and the Demonshields.
General description
Thalantyr is an older human conjurer who lives at High Hedge northwest of Beregost. He is lean, severe, and impatient with visitors who substitute civic rank for arcane proof. His dark robes, worn component belt, and guarded spellbooks reflect a wizard who works alone and expects trouble to find him.
Key facts
- Nimra Keld is his former apprentice and a specialist in magical-site surveying. In Adventure 007 she has missed an agreed return from work at Ulcaster. He asks the party to find her, but does not yet know she is a prisoner.
- Thalantyr's estate is guarded by griffons and magical servants.
- He recognizes Shoon-era shield-work tied to Hilather and Ulcaster's research.
- He believes Hilather's Workbook and a surviving Demonshield could reveal the method Ulcaster nearly recovered.
- After Mordas's ritual phase-rejects, Thalantyr recognizes that a damaged Ulcasterian glyph described a separate prison-key rather than doubled amplification.
- He and Quentin can explain why Mordas's spell-lens method could never create a Demonshield: the lens opens and magnifies, but it cannot invert planar resonance or seal a vessel.
- He has considered using that discovery as the foundation for a refounded Ulcasterian school.
- He can identify arjale and tantulhor by description.
- He regards a fiend-bound shield as a prison before he regards it as treasure.
