Item
Kuraltaar
The thirteenth Demonshield
The only named shield from Hilather's set, an almost indestructible silver diamond shield that imprisons the glabrezu Kural'Risyk.
General description
Kuraltaar is a Shoon-era diamond shield assembled from triangular plates. Its untarnished silver alloy contains arjale and tantulhor, light and slightly flexible metals brought from Phlegethos. A green design marks its face. When the shield's protections awaken, an illusion of the muscular glabrezu Kural'Risyk briefly covers the bearer.

Key facts
- Kuraltaar remained in the royal vaults beneath the Imperial Mount of Shoonach for court mages to study while the other twelve Demonshields went to mameluk slave-kings.
- In 371 DR, the Year of Emerald Eyes, Qysara Shaani gave the shield to the blue dragon Iryklathagra, called Sharpfangs, as part of a century-tribute.
- Kuraltaar had left Shoonach before the Great Fires destroyed the imperial court in 450 DR. It is believed to remain in Iryklathagra’s mountain hoard.
- The shield channels parts of Kural'Risyk's resilience, elemental defenses, immunity to poison, and resistance to magic.
- Kural'Risyk cannot be contacted while the prison remains intact.
- Destroying Kuraltaar releases the glabrezu immediately.
Construction
The arjale-and-tantulhor alloy is nearly impervious to ordinary physical damage but retains enough flexibility to absorb a blow. The shield's shape and riveted triangular construction identify it as Shoon-period armament even when its enchantment is dormant.
Scholarly value
Ulcasterian scholars believe the shield preserves practical evidence missing from Hilather's Workbook. Thalantyr wants to compare the artifact with the workbook's formulas and use the result to refound Ulcaster's school. Rhinnom of Amn instead wants the shield as a threat against the Cowled Wizards.
Danger of possession
Possessing Kuraltaar invites attacks from Calishite mages, rival summoners, and planar creatures. Any attempt to dismantle, suppress, or destroy it risks freeing Kural'Risyk in the place where the experiment is performed.
