Hilather's Workbook

Hilather's sole surviving record of the method used to forge the thirteen Demonshields, hidden inside an apparently worthless volume in a royal Tethyrian library.

General description

A thick working notebook in a deliberately plain, cracked-brown binding with no title or maker's mark. Beneath the false flyleaves are layered diagrams of diamond shields divided into triangular plates, fiend-naming tables, metal tolerances, and corrections written over corrections. Hilather treated it as a workshop record rather than a polished grimoire: useful conclusions sit beside failed formulae, supply tallies, and impatient marginal warnings.

Key facts

The workbook is the only known written record of Hilather's complete Demonshield process.
Its false binding and worthless-looking outer pages were designed to defeat cataloguers and thieves rather than magical detection.
The surviving text separates the work into plate geometry, vessel preparation, true-name constraints, and the final act that draws a fiend into the shield.
Hilather records thirteen completed shields. No entry describes a fourteenth vessel or a safe method for destroying a completed shield.
Ulcaster and his senior apprentices attempted to reconstruct the method from Hilather's earlier work but never possessed the workbook itself.
A surviving Demonshield supplies physical evidence needed to distinguish Hilather's successful formulae from the many abandoned calculations in the margins.

What the workbook contains

  • Plate plans specifying the angles, thickness, rivet sequence, and joined channels of the triangular components.
  • Metallurgical notes identifying which alloys accept a binding and which merely conduct the summoning force into the bearer.
  • True-name tables and substitution marks used to target a particular fiend without writing its complete name on any single page.
  • A containment sequence that makes the shield a prison rather than a gateway, with repeated warnings that one reversed line frees the intended captive into the ritual chamber.
  • Thirteen terse completion entries recording defects, corrections, and the disposition of each finished Demonshield.

Loss and rediscovery

Hilather's workbook vanished after he delivered the Demonshields to Qysar Amahl Shoon IV. Later catalogues never named it because the surviving volume was rebound as a dull miscellany and shelved among books judged to have no scholarly value. It now rests in the royal library of King Haedrak III of Tethyr. Thalantyr knows the trail well enough to believe the book survives, but not well enough to retrieve it without a separate expedition.

Using the workbook in a campaign

The physical workbook is not recovered at Ulcaster. In Adventure 007 it represents the missing authority behind every faction's partial reconstruction. Thalantyr wants it to complete Ulcaster's scholarship, Vestra wants it kept away from mortal binders, Mordas would use it to standardize new Demonshields, and Quentin values it as a dangerous historical source. A later Tethyr expedition can make the disguised book the center of a library heist, diplomatic request, or race against another collector.

Limits of the text

Possessing the workbook does not make Demonshield creation quick or safe. The process requires rare materials, a prepared vessel, a known fiend, specialized tools, and a ritual site capable of containing a failure. The text is complete enough to make attempts possible, not complete enough to make them routine.

The lost workbook is the absent source behind Ulcaster's reconstruction and the clearest explanation for why Mordas's new shield remains dangerously experimental.
