General description

Quentin has fully adopted his human identity. He regularly uses Candlekeep's library, then returns to a natural cave far below the citadel and beyond the reach of its magical wards. He sends other people into dangerous ruins to recover the Netherese objects he covets. He treats the party as useful friends while keeping his nature, home, risks, and full objectives to himself.

Key facts

Quentin is motivated to find, retrieve, and hoard as many Netherese objects as possible.
He will not put himself in harm's way, but he has no objection to endangering others.
He has little regard for human life or safety and imitates empathy in ways that sound conspicuously out of touch.
He calls nearly everyone "friend."
He often frames requests as settled decisions: "You will do this thing. Thank you."
He carries his own books, loose notes, and research materials to and from Candlekeep, but does not openly remove works from the Avowed's collection.
If the party keeps Ysuran's black tome after Adventure 003, Quentin recognizes its Netherese recurrence text and tries to buy or borrow it.
In Adventure 007, Quentin remains cooperative after the party permits Mordas's evil bargain only if they secure the intact Netherese spell-lens; he does not defend them to Vestra or Ormlyr.

DM truth

Quentin Lorekeeper is a young bronze dragon who has maintained a human disguise for years. The scholar is not a temporary alias. Quentin has adopted the identity completely and protects it as carefully as he protects his hoard.

Motivation

Quentin wants to locate, retrieve, study, and ultimately hoard ancient Netherese machines and artifacts. Each expedition is another acquisition. His historical interest is genuine, but possession matters more to him than preservation, ownership, or the safety of the people sent to recover an object.

Cover and secrecy

Quentin presents himself as a human scholar and historian and will not willingly reveal his draconic nature to strangers under ordinary circumstances. Players or NPCs may occasionally glimpse a bronze dragon elsewhere, but the sighting must not identify that dragon as Quentin. Keep the connection concealed until Mel's Pit.

Roleplaying Quentin

Quentin speaks quickly and uses excited, vivid language when discussing his research. He tells fantastical stories about machines recovered from deep ruins, forgotten temples, and sealed caves. He is eccentric and treats familiarity as a fact, calling everyone "friend." When assigning work, use a presumptive close rather than a request: "You will recover the device for me. Thank you, friend."

Danger and empathy

Quentin avoids personal danger and expects other people to accept it in his place. He has no meaningful regard for human life or safety. When injury or death demands sympathy, he performs concern without understanding its weight. His condolences may be technically polite, badly timed, or followed immediately by a question about the recovered object.

Appearance

In human form, Quentin appears to be a young, thin academic with wild metallic-bronze hair, crooked round spectacles, and mismatched or disheveled clothes. His hair catches hard light with a restrained burnished sheen. He is usually burdened with large books, loose papers, and writing utensils. He does not normally carry a weapon.

Courier variation

When Quentin wants to move quickly without looking like a Candlekeep academic, he keeps the same face, spectacles, and metallic-bronze hair but trades the long blue scholar coat, books, and quill for a weathered moss-green travel coat, a short brown shoulder cape, dust-caked boots, and a compact cross-body delivery satchel.

Candlekeep and lair

Quentin regularly uses the library at Candlekeep, usually settling into the same small research alcove when it is available. He is not housed by the Avowed. His true residence and hoard occupy a natural cave far below the fortress, beyond the reach of Candlekeep's magical wards and outside its bedrock cellars.

Motivation
Locate, retrieve, study, and hoard ancient Netherese machines before fools, killers, or rival collectors can claim them.
Quirks
Calls nearly everyone 'friend,' speaks faster when excited, frames requests as settled decisions, and follows condolences with questions about the recovered object.
