Voss Compact Ledger
Voss's red-edged record cross-indexes infernal obligations, mortal aliases, compact witnesses, and the intelligence network he later placed at Mordas's disposal.
General description
This coat-pocket ledger is bound in dark leather with red-painted page edges and a brass clasp that is always faintly warm. Its cramped entries alternate between Infernal legal notation, trade cant, aliases, and ordinary accounting. To a casual reader it resembles a moneylender's private book. Read together, its cross-references establish the identity behind Voss's disguises and the obligations he breached.

Key facts
- The ledger is not Voss's complete contract. It is his working index to the compact, the payments made under it, and the mortal arrangements built with its benefits.
- Repeated names and seal marks connect identities used decades apart to the same debtor. Vestra can use those continuities to name Voss formally despite his disguises.
- Entries concerning Mordas show that Voss transferred compact-supported routes, informants, and safe houses to a third party without the required infernal accounting.
- The clasp warms near Vestra's brass token. Blood or ash smeared across it does not destroy the record, but it can obscure one identifying seal until the book is carefully cleaned.
- Ormlyr treats the ledger as suspicious private evidence. Vestra understands its legal force immediately and can translate the parts that matter to a mortal court.
Representative ledger entries
- Folio 3, Debtor: SELDRAN VOSS. Mortal style entered as 'Seldran Voss, factor.' Prior styles cross-referenced: Halren Moss, Vael Sorn, Master Reth. Continuous obligation; change of face does not constitute change of party.
- Folio 11, Consideration received: three guarded routes, seven purchased names, and warning of two lawful searches. Counter-obligation: one true report at each winter reckoning and no transfer of the purchased network without leave.
- Folio 18, Witnesses: Ashglass at the Red Gate; the advocate called Bright-Coat; mortal witness deceased. Ashglass seal renewed after the debtor's fourth assumed identity.
- Folio 26, Beregost account: route lists, warehouse eyes, and the north-road dead drops placed at the disposal of MORDAS. No leave entered. No tithe received. Marked twice in the margin: BREACH RESERVED.
- Folio 29, Circle disbursement: coin advanced against forge samples, produce wagons, and the movement of a 'schoolman's plates.' Recipient cipher matches Mordas's broken-circle mark.
- Inside back cover, Remedy: on proved alienation of compact consideration, debtor is subject to seizure, naming, and remand. Death of the present body does not satisfy the debt.
Reading the ledger
A character who knows Infernal can identify the repeated concepts of identity, consideration, breach, and remand after 10 minutes. A successful DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check connects the alias register to Voss's mortal records. With Vestra's explanation, no check is required to understand why the Mordas transfer violates the compact.
Using it in play
The ledger proves more than criminal association. It gives Vestra the exact identity, witnessing chain, and breach clause she needs for infernal remand. If the party keeps it from her, it remains valuable leverage but also a document whose named powers may come looking for it. A careful copy preserves the mortal evidence; Vestra insists that the original carries the operative seals.
Adventure appearances
006 — I Shot the Sheriff
The red-edged ledger is one of the records threatened during the Voss House raid. Recovering it lets Vestra identify Voss's breach and press a clean claim for remand.
