General description

Gallows Thicket is a dense, unhealthy knot of trees and brush where hanging bodies appear among twisted branches. From a distance it can be mistaken for an old execution site, a bandit warning, or the aftermath of local violence. Closer inspection reveals inconsistencies: ropes that are really fibrous growths, bodies suspended at unnatural angles, disturbed ground without matching footprints, and branches positioned as if the vegetation itself arranged the display.

Key facts

The hanging corpses are part of the predator's hunting environment rather than evidence of an organized execution site.
The location is most dangerous when characters assume the visible bodies explain the threat and stop investigating the vegetation.
Old remains can still carry mundane clues about previous victims even when the manner of death is monstrous rather than judicial.

Appearance

Describe the thicket as visually confusing before revealing the monster. Tangled branches interrupt sightlines, dangling shapes move independently in the wind, and undergrowth makes it difficult to see where trunks actually begin. The smell of wet bark, rot, and old death should make the site unpleasant even before initiative is rolled.

Warning signs

Careful characters can notice that some apparent ropes merge into living wood, that scavengers avoid particular bodies, or that drag marks end beneath the canopy. These clues should reward caution without requiring the party to identify the exact creature before danger begins.

Using Gallows Thicket

Use the thicket as an encounter where misreading the scene is the central risk. The apparent story is 'people were hanged here.' The actual story is 'something learned that hanging bodies attract curious travelers.' Even after the creature is defeated, the corpses can provide names, possessions, or evidence connecting earlier victims to another part of the adventure.
